SAN JUAN: Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla, welcomed Sunday the first Southwest Airline flight to arrive in the island. The plane from Orlando, Florida, landed at the Luis Munoz Marin Airport and was greeted by the president and executives of the company Southwest Airlines.
"Our tourism industry has lost its momentum in the past decade. Today tourism represents only 7 percent of our GDP. With the arrival of renowned airlines like Southwest, we take an important step for the local tourism industry reflects the global reality where this important sector contributes nearly 10 percent of global economic activity. "Said Governor Garcia Padilla .
The new airline will retain the jobs of Air Tran, acquired by Southwest in the United States, and create new jobs. Things were moving right along until three weeks ago.
Then the Southwest Florida tourism market hit what Virginia Haley, president of the Sarasota Convention & Visitors Bureau, jokingly called "radio silence."
"They were getting their hotel prices locked in, ...o know what we are going to do about it," Kuykendall said. "We've been proactive early on. We signed a contract with Southwest Airlines to boost traffic for fall and winter. We opened an office in China."
The agency also launched "media missions" and sent teams to places like Dallas, Chicago and Birmingham, Ala., as well as focusing on markets from where people can easily drive to Florida.
